Steve DeVaux reviews the Classic Plastic show in
October, 2001.
Well, another Classic Plastic event has come and
gone. This show is always an interesting event for a number of reasons. It’s
always good to see the other MassCar guys (about 20 of us) and people from
the other clubs and hang out and talk plastic for an afternoon. I didn’t
make it down to the vendor tables until most of them had packed up and left
(2 p.m.). It’s just as well – I’m told that I have enough toy cars anyway…
They have a restaurant on site at the hotel, but
service was so bad there last year that we opted to take a visit to the 99,
one exit south. They managed to accommodate the large MassCar contingent.
The food was good and the service was great (thanks Kristen!). Seems that
there’s always food involved around MassCar people…
Anyway, back to the show…The MassCar Model Car
Show has 5 classes of shelf models, whilst Classic Plastic has 27!! Other
than that, most MassCar members will feel very comfortable because the
Classic Plastic rules and registration forms are virtually identical to
MassCars. Registration was very quick and efficient. In fact, the only real
problem with the show was that the judging. They had finished the judging in
one room and were finishing up with judging in the second room when they
realised that they had not picked ‘Best Of’ Awards from the first room.
Unfortunately, when they went back to look in the first room most of the
models had been packed up! The end result was that all of the ‘Best Of’s
came from the second room judged, with 4 out of 10 going to Classic Plastic
club President Del Paone. Two other ‘Best Of’s went to other Classic Plastic
members (obviously, they were busy judging and had not packed up their
models). Del is a very good builder and, like a builder from MassCar I know,
makes excellent use of the "Gotcha Factor." One other thing I have
discovered about the Classic Plastic show is that their judges fall victim
to that same "Gotcha Factor" and unfortunately miss the things they should
be looking at.
So, something to remember if you want to win a
trophy at a Classic Plastic show...put the highest gloss finish and the
brightest color you can on your model, and you're practically a shoe-in for
gold. I was not a contender for any of the ‘Best Of’ awards, so this is not
sour grapes, but it did leave me with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
As I said, this show is interesting for a number
of reasons, but the most interesting part of the show was sitting around
snickering as they read the judging results for trophies. Overall, MassCar
members did OK in the bringing home the gold part of the show; I think that
everyone who entered managed to place.
